my lovely friend amy over at: http://stylesnacks.typepad.com/ asked me to do a beginner raw post. i feel like a beginner still with so much to learn but here goes and i'll do my best!
fav beginner recipes with ingredients you can pick up at whole foods or your local health food store.
*green smoothies: any combo of greens and fruit will do nicely. suggested recipe: 3 handfuls of spinach, 1 1/2 cups of water, a banana or two and 1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries. blend it up! two of my favorites are spinach, parsley and pear or greens and peaches!
*sea vegetable sushi salad: 2 sheets of raw nori torn into bite size pieces, thinly sliced red bell pepper, alfalfa sprouts, ginger, 1/2 squeezed lemon, 2 shredded carrots, one diced cucumber, and a few handfuls of romaine. toss and eat!
*fruit smoothie: 1 to 2 cups of water, 1 or 2 bananas or mangoes, and/or pineapple, and/or frozen cherries, and/or cranberries, or strawberries… you get the idea, choose 3 different fruits with some water and blend it up, yum!
*almond butter and banana snack: sliced banana with almond butter, so simple and yummy!
*avocado boat: cut avocado in half, remove the pit, fill the little vacancy with fresh salsa, eat it with a spoon!
*carrot curry soup: 3 to 5 carrots, curry seasoning, enough water for desired thickness- maybe an avocado too, blend it!
*romaine tacos: romaine "boats" or "shells" fill with smashed avocado, pumpkin seeds, fresh salsa, cilantro and a dash of cumin. i can eat like 4 of these.
simple shopping list for the above recipes:
pumpkin seeds
nori sheets
red bell pepper
ginger- i buy it in a jar by ginger people
lemons
cucumber
sprouts
bag of carrots
romaine
almond butter
bunch of bananas
frozen fruit
favorite greens
fresh salsa
curry powder
few avocados
when adding raw foods to your life you can really have so much fun with it. be creative, find flavors that you like and put it all together and see what happens!
health wise i think green smoothies are the shining star. everyone can benefit from drinking more greens and fruit.
xoxo
let me know if you try more live raw foods!
Nice post!
This is a really helpful post, and I will definitely let you know when I try out some of these recipes. I just made a TON of alfalfa sprouts, and the sushi salad looks like a fun and easy way to use them. Looks like you have a cookbook in the making entitled…"simple delights for the raw athlete":)
