That’s me age 2 (I’m guessing). Some of my earliest memories are of this house, dock and beach. The little house behind me had a bar, a bathroom and a couch. The main home was up a steep tall staircase covered by tree branches so even in the summer time the walk up or down was cold, wet and damp in the pacific northwest.

The Dawntreader by Joni Mitchell

Peridots and periwinkle blue medallions
Gilded galleons spilled across the ocean floor
Treasure somewhere in the sea and he will find where
Never mind their questions there’s no answer for
The roll of the harbor wake
The songs that the rigging makes
The taste of the spray he takes
And he learns to give
He aches and he learns to live
He stakes all his silver
On a promise to be free
Mermaids live in colonies
All his sea dreams come to me

City satins left at home I will not need them
I believe him when he tells of loving me
Something truthful in the sea your lies will find you
Leave behind your streets he said and come to me
Come down from the neon nights
Come down from the tourist sights
Run down till the rain delights you
You do not hide
Sunlight will renew your pride
Skin white by skin golden
Like a promise to be free
Dolphins playing in the sea
All his sea dreams come to me

Seabird I have seen you fly above the pilings
I am smiling at your circles in the air
I will come and sit by you while he lies sleeping
Fold your fleet wings I have brought some dreams to share
A dream that you love someone
A dream that the wars are done
A dream that you tell no one but the grey sea
They’ll say that you’re crazy
And a dream of a baby
Like a promise to be free
Children laughing out to sea
All his sea dreams come to me

Before our trip to SoCal I blogged a list of things I wanted to do so here's what I got to (almost everything!):

*family -check

*sunshine -check

*the ocean -in Santa Barbara after a great lunch at the Chamomile Cafe in Carpinteria

*Christmas -check

*birthdays -check

*new year -check

*loads of raw restaurants!! -check

*Camarillo outlets: Betsey Johnson, AG, and more! -check

*Santa Monica promenade -twice!

*Juliano's Raw -loads more then I should admit!

*Rawvolution -oh my goodness the raw chocolate mint cheesecake! I even bought a tank top!

*Real Food Daily -tasty with some raw options!

*Disneyland -check. Way busier then we hoped but we had so much fun. Eliot keeps asking when we can go back.
He was so fearless! Eliot went on Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain. Seriously.

*Malibu- Cross Creek -nope

*gym -Yes and no… I didn't go to 24 Hour Fitness as I had planned but rather went to a yoga/pilates studio in the valley with my mother-in-law. Her instructor kicks all kinds of butt! So love her! I also had fantastic workouts running through Woodland Hills and later in Ojai. Can I tell you about the difference in air quality? Wow.

*Au Lac- nope.

*Cru -Wow. Amazing service, amazing food, beautiful atmosphere at night. I really liked this little place in Silverlake.

*Santa Monica stairs -Yes! Gorgeous foggy Santa Monica day. As those who live there know it can be sunny and bright
at 14th Street but at 7th completely cold and foggy. The stairs are at the end of 4th. Pretty
crowded for a chilly December day! Loved it!

*The beach -drove by it, sat in the sand, loved it.

*Tarina Tarantino -Brought in an online coupon for a discount. I bought a few hair accessories.

*Marc by Marc Jacobs -Love the cheapy stuff. I bought compacts and fingerless mittens, an umbrella with hearts all
                                      over it and more. Score.

*friends! -Tried so hard to see people and very thankful for a couple meet ups with familiar smiling faces. Hugs!

*Leaf -I only got here once when I thought it'd be my staple while staying in the valley. Just got so busy! Still great!
Funny story: As I was ordering a very impatient LA girl was waiting so I told her to go ahead of me but
guy had already started my stuff so she huffed and puffed shifting the weight on her feet saying, "Shit" under
her breath. (But still audibly, hello?) Anyway, sorta typical regional behavior. When she did get her drink she
turned into evryone's best friend with a flashy smile and big "Thank you!" Are you kidding me? ha

*Madeleine Bistro -Had a brunch here with just me and the husband which was nice and then extra extra lovely was
when my (not vegan) inlaws took us back for a beautiful dinner. The food was incredible!!!
                              Thank you again!!

*Montana Ave -Met a dear friend here for girl talk and people watching. One of my favorite places for people and dog
                         watching in LA.

*Ojai -So wonderful! The park, sweet Catherine and her equally groovy daughter Molly at Bhavantu, ran in the sun,
the Sunday farmer's market, Serendipity toy store and all!!

 California by Joni Mitchell

Sitting in a park in Paris France
Reading the news and it sure looks bad
They won't give peace a chance
That was just a dream some of us had
Still a lot of lands to see
But I wouldn't want to stay here
It's too old and cold and settled in its ways here
Oh but California

California I'm coming home
I'm going to see the folks I dig
I'll even kiss a Sunset pig
California I'm coming home

I met a redneck on a Grecian isle
Who did the goat dance very well
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell
Oh the rogue the red red rogue
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him there
But my heart cried out for you California

Oh California I'm coming home
Oh make me feel good rock 'n' roll band
I'm your biggest fan
California I'm coming home

Oh it gets so lonely
When you're walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
Just gives you the blues
Just gives you the blues
So I bought me a ticket
I caught a plane to Spain
Went to a party down a red dirt road
There were lots of pretty people there
Reading Rolling Stone reading Vogue
They said "How long can you hang around?"
I said a week maybe two
Just until my skin turns brown
Then I'm going home to California

California I'm coming home
Oh will you take me as I am
Strung out on another man
California I'm coming home

Oh it gets so lonely
When you're walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
More about the war
And the bloody changes
Oh will you take me as I am?
Will you take me as I am?
Will you?

i'm going to take this week off. we're traveling, getting ready for mother's day and my nephew's birthday. i'll return monday night to give my report of my 6 course dinner with juliano. i'm so excited!!

xoxo

this song goes through my head a lot, joni mitchell's hejira:

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
That shell shock love away
There's comfort in melancholy
When there's no need to explain
It's just as natural as the weather
In this moody sky today
In our possessive coupling
So much could not be expressed
So now I'm returning to myself
These things that you and I suppressed
I see something of myself in everyone
Just at this moment of the world
As snow gathers like bolts of lace
Waltzing on a ballroom girl

You know it never has been easy
Whether you do or you do not resign
Whether you travel the breadth of extremities
Or stick to some straighter line
Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock
They're either going to thaw out or freeze
Listen
Strains of Benny Goodman
Coming through the snow and the pinewood trees
I'm porous with travel fever
But you know I'm so glad to be on my own
Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger
Can set up trembling in my bones
I know no one's going to show me everything
We all come and go unknown
Each so deep and superficial
Between the forceps and the stone

Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tribute to finality to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken scratching for my immortality
In the church they light the candles
And the wax rolls down like tears
There's the hope and the hopelessness
I've witnessed thirty years
We're only particles of change I know I know
Orbiting around the sun
But how can I have that point of view
When I'm always bound and tied to someone
White flags of winter chimneys
Waving truce against the moon
In the mirrors of a modern bank
From the window of a hotel room

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
Until love sucks me back that way

i spent the morning tending to a feverish little pumpkin. eliot still wanted to make almond mylk with me. he said he wanted to make "roseberry" milk. well, i've never seen a roseberry so i told him we didn't have any so he said, "how about strawberry lemon, that sounds really good," so that's what we did, minus the lemon.

i made so much almond mylk that i had enough to make two 32 ounce shakes. strawberry and chocolate banana blueberry mesquite. i couldn't help myself.

B: 2 baby pears while i made 3 smoothies. smoothie: coconut water, italian parsley, collards, cacoa powder, mesquite, soaked chia seeds, a banana, agave, peaches, and cherries. looks like moss, smells like parsley and tastes lovely.

for the past year and a half i've titled my posts with tori amos lyrics and song titles. because i love her and it it was fun. i'm now moving to joni mitchell lyriics and song titles as of yesterday. i hope this doesn't disrupt your life as i make this significant change, hehe!

L: salad: nori, romaine, red bell pepper, lime juice, ginger, avocado, celery and cucumber

s:  blueberry, banana, and chocolate shake

10 minutes practice spinning poi

D: vita cafe take out- cooked food, vegan blt and vegan mac n cheese with steamed broccoli

i'm feeling ill so it's off to bed with me! i'm so bummed! i had such a good 3 mile run last night! i ran faster then my race time!  so feeling sick feels unexpected and annoying.

be well! eat well!

xoxo

you know how you go on vacation then suddenly you're jut ready to go home? that's how i feel right now. i'm trying to embrace portland, i really am. but, when i think of california i get a little dizzy with longing. i hear joni mitchell singing to my heart about california, "oh california i'm coming home, gonna see the folks i dig i'll even kiss a sunset pig, california coming home". makes me blue. eliot is echoing my sentiments. he keeps saying he wants to go on a trip.

pdx positives:
the allen-gibson fam
vegan friendly
andy works at home

things i miss:
boot camp
my fav raw restaurants
the dish
beaches
sunshine
spring starting in february (sort of)
ability to drive to see fam

what can i say? i feel weird here. like i don't belong. in some ways like an awkward teenager. yuck! i must change this mindset, and plan a trip!

What are the 10 most memorable music performances you've seen? (Remember, "memorable" may not be good.)
Submitted by Bill

in no particular order…

1. i remember falling asleep at a dinosaur junior show at a club in seattle
2. seeing tori amos for the first time at the moore theater in seattle, little earthquakes era
3. tori again, seeing her with lydia, in seattle and i was just hoping hoping hoping for her to sing "song for eric" she
pulled it out for the last encore and i cried. and to top it off, the song before my silently requested song was tori's
cover of "a case of you" by joni mitchell
4. dancing on stage with ben lee at a sf show
5. front row in the pit, tori again, and meeting her after in her dressing room
6. elvis costello  in sf.  wow
7.  tori again in los angeles.  andy and i were in the pit and it was just recently after we had met her and i will swear
until i die that she spotted us, we had a moment there and she did a small improve and yes, i was weeping, cause  i'm a big dork and felt like it was for me.
8. soundgarden with lydia, ooooooo crazy fun and we went backstage after and got our passes signed
9. rufus wainwright at the fillmore. ben lee opened and i fell in love and rufus was amazing.
10. my countless tori shows are all so special to me, some more than others and really any show at largo in la is so
andy and i saw louden wainwright there, tom brosseau, bill frisell and andy's been there many more times then
     me.

tori's touring again this year! yippee!
