Last Saturday I spent the day at the Raw Spirit festival in the Santa Barbara mountains. I was so fortunate to meet back up with Matt Monarch and Angela Stokes as well as meet for the first time the lovely Cathy Silvers, Vanessa (aka chocolategirl), and gorgeous Philip McCluskey! I saw David Wolfe, Juliano and Ariel, Solla, and Steve from Raw Vegan Radio. Met up again with Enrique from Henry's raw vegan ice cream (he's so sweet, ha) and met Courtney Pool, Chele Eades, Kevin and Annmarie Gianni from The Renegade Health Show and Revell from Rawkin Radio! I hope I'm not forgetting anyone!

Cathy Silvers hosted David Wolfe and Matt Monarch in a durian eating contest and below are my crazy pictures atop a folding chair! I'm just under five feet tall and this is the best I could get!

And here's my loot! Some bought and some gifts!

I would definitley attend Raw Spirit again with hopes that they make it closer in to a major city, no camping, and perhaps like Courtney from Radical Radiance suggested, they should put it on at a resort. It was very expensive to get in and I know the vendors had to pay a lot of money too. Wondering where the money went? Love the vibe, people watching and of course the food!!

Lastly, here's a birdie from Disneyland just for funsies:

Before our trip to SoCal I blogged a list of things I wanted to do so here's what I got to (almost everything!):

*family -check

*sunshine -check

*the ocean -in Santa Barbara after a great lunch at the Chamomile Cafe in Carpinteria

*Christmas -check

*birthdays -check

*new year -check

*loads of raw restaurants!! -check

*Camarillo outlets: Betsey Johnson, AG, and more! -check

*Santa Monica promenade -twice!

*Juliano's Raw -loads more then I should admit!

*Rawvolution -oh my goodness the raw chocolate mint cheesecake! I even bought a tank top!

*Real Food Daily -tasty with some raw options!

*Disneyland -check. Way busier then we hoped but we had so much fun. Eliot keeps asking when we can go back.
He was so fearless! Eliot went on Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain. Seriously.

*Malibu- Cross Creek -nope

*gym -Yes and no… I didn't go to 24 Hour Fitness as I had planned but rather went to a yoga/pilates studio in the valley with my mother-in-law. Her instructor kicks all kinds of butt! So love her! I also had fantastic workouts running through Woodland Hills and later in Ojai. Can I tell you about the difference in air quality? Wow.

*Au Lac- nope.

*Cru -Wow. Amazing service, amazing food, beautiful atmosphere at night. I really liked this little place in Silverlake.

*Santa Monica stairs -Yes! Gorgeous foggy Santa Monica day. As those who live there know it can be sunny and bright
at 14th Street but at 7th completely cold and foggy. The stairs are at the end of 4th. Pretty
crowded for a chilly December day! Loved it!

*The beach -drove by it, sat in the sand, loved it.

*Tarina Tarantino -Brought in an online coupon for a discount. I bought a few hair accessories.

*Marc by Marc Jacobs -Love the cheapy stuff. I bought compacts and fingerless mittens, an umbrella with hearts all
                                      over it and more. Score.

*friends! -Tried so hard to see people and very thankful for a couple meet ups with familiar smiling faces. Hugs!

*Leaf -I only got here once when I thought it'd be my staple while staying in the valley. Just got so busy! Still great!
Funny story: As I was ordering a very impatient LA girl was waiting so I told her to go ahead of me but
guy had already started my stuff so she huffed and puffed shifting the weight on her feet saying, "Shit" under
her breath. (But still audibly, hello?) Anyway, sorta typical regional behavior. When she did get her drink she
turned into evryone's best friend with a flashy smile and big "Thank you!" Are you kidding me? ha

*Madeleine Bistro -Had a brunch here with just me and the husband which was nice and then extra extra lovely was
when my (not vegan) inlaws took us back for a beautiful dinner. The food was incredible!!!
                              Thank you again!!

*Montana Ave -Met a dear friend here for girl talk and people watching. One of my favorite places for people and dog
                         watching in LA.

*Ojai -So wonderful! The park, sweet Catherine and her equally groovy daughter Molly at Bhavantu, ran in the sun,
the Sunday farmer's market, Serendipity toy store and all!!

 California by Joni Mitchell

Sitting in a park in Paris France
Reading the news and it sure looks bad
They won't give peace a chance
That was just a dream some of us had
Still a lot of lands to see
But I wouldn't want to stay here
It's too old and cold and settled in its ways here
Oh but California

California I'm coming home
I'm going to see the folks I dig
I'll even kiss a Sunset pig
California I'm coming home

I met a redneck on a Grecian isle
Who did the goat dance very well
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell
Oh the rogue the red red rogue
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him there
But my heart cried out for you California

Oh California I'm coming home
Oh make me feel good rock 'n' roll band
I'm your biggest fan
California I'm coming home

Oh it gets so lonely
When you're walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
Just gives you the blues
Just gives you the blues
So I bought me a ticket
I caught a plane to Spain
Went to a party down a red dirt road
There were lots of pretty people there
Reading Rolling Stone reading Vogue
They said "How long can you hang around?"
I said a week maybe two
Just until my skin turns brown
Then I'm going home to California

California I'm coming home
Oh will you take me as I am
Strung out on another man
California I'm coming home

Oh it gets so lonely
When you're walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
More about the war
And the bloody changes
Oh will you take me as I am?
Will you take me as I am?
Will you?

today i decided i'm stopping food blogging. i'll still rave if i make something fantastic but as of now i think the learning i wanted to achieve from jotting down my own daily diet has come to an end. it's been a good run and i've been able to see patterns and i hope that it's been helpful to others too.

i love food, i love raw food and i love restaurants and decadent dining experiences. i love to make food now, which is huge and of course i still love to have food made for me, especially by my talented family. examples here: http://bread-and-honey.blogspot.com/.

i'm all about being vegan, eating loads of fruits and vegetables and the wonderful world of green everything! my plan is to continue eating high raw and cooked vegan meals. limiting sugar, beans and grains. i've learned about my cravings, i've learned what i need to fuel my body for runs and strength building. and for me it's a combo of cooked and raw food.

after growing up with endless amounts of cheese, bread, meat, butter, cookies, pasta, ice cream, canned vegetables and canned fruit (sorry mom, it's true! we just all know better now.)… and then being a junk food vegetarian, raw food has put nutrition and health in beautiful focus.

i'm still reading and studying books and blogs, all i can get my hands on. i'm addicted to goneraw and i just love people like david wolfe, juliano, and elaina love.

next here on vox will be musings on my life, hopeful, honest, heartfelt and all that sap i love, save for a few delicious rants and feet-stomping-soapboxing that i'm also keen on.

thanks lovelies!

xoxo

10 minutes on the rebounder

B: water, 2 small bowls of lydia's raw cereal with a banana and blueberries

s: e3 live and water

L: 32 ounces of green smoothie: lemon, water, celery, a huge cucumber, and about 5 handfuls of spinach. and a smart dog!

went for a walk with eliot, it's nearly 90 today. so lovely. we found a stick and he started pointing it everywhere and doing "magic". he has such a good eye, he sees coins on the ground from a mile away and he gets so excited. hmmm, reminds me of someone. andy?

we came home and eliot played outside with chalk and jumped through a hopscotch that andy had made. when he came inside he helped me make up a raw ratatouille from goneraw.com. and then i made a chocolate shake to swoon over. it tasted just like juliano's. i usually order two of them when i visit his restaurant in santa monica, one at the beginning of my meal and one to take out the door. so here's what i did:

s: chocolate shake: almond mylk i made yesterday (with almonds, water, a couple dates and a banana), 4 scoops cacao, 1/2 small scoop of cacao nibs, one scoop mesquite, vanilla, pinch of salt, a banana, and 4 ice cubes. blended away! on top i sprinkled more cacao nibs, goji berries, and bee pollen. this was incredibly right and so yummy!

yesterday as i left for my exercise class in the park, eliot said to me, "be safe mommy and watch out for skeletons." hehe.

D: indian thali dinner. and 2 chocolate chip cookies. i just could endlessly eat today!

the heat here is different then in california and i'll tell you how. it's the smell of all these flowers and trees baking in the sun. then there's the lighting. it's light here until after nine. the energy is all too familiar. all my memories of childhood and being a teenager here come flooding back to me. i can feel them as real as they were when i first experienced them.

the three of us, my little family, we played at a school yard park across the street from andy's sister's house tonight. painted on the concrete in multicolors is a map of america. i walked from new york and headed west, staring at california, long and lean on the west coast. my eyes drifted up to oregon and washington. i never thought i'd be back this way again. it's so strange and in my blood this emotional connection here and in california. california is my adopted home and i long for her sun, her warmth, her salty air and i wonder if our lives will ever take us back to live there.

B: more of juliano's elixir from last night

s: scoop of raw honey and a couple bites of lydia's berry good cereal

L: salad and zucchini pasta, also from last night

s: a few not raw tiny cookies- oatmeal and chocolate chip. i think they're called laura's junk food

5 mile run, weights, abs

D: smoothie: coconut water, one banana, hemp seeds, one very large cucumber, 2 handfuls of spinach and honey with a smart dog and chips and mango papaya salsa

i need to discuss trader joe's. so, here it is: my skin crawls at the thought of this place. i went there today with eliot and explained to my little boy why i was so frustrated with this store! it is a nightmare of packaging in the produce section. things that don't need plastic boxes, cases, cardboard, and bags consume the area. it overflows with potential trash. the packaging they use is not even reusable. pathetic. makes me crazy- obviously. everyone always raves about trader joe's. i stopped going while living in santa monica because the parking lot was a tiny nightmare. sometimes i'd run in for their mango salsa, which i still love. and when i was pregnant and right after i gave birth i was addicted to the frozen french toast. i need to just beg this worthwhile company to quit it with the produce packaging. for now i won't be going back.

i'm back and refreshed, lovelies!

B: smoothie: coconut water, mango and blueberries. the rest of a almost all raw chocolate torte from blossoming lotus.

3 mile run, weights and trampoline jumping

s: live fudge, water

L: coconut water, cherries, strawberries, mango, hulled hemp seeds, raw raspberry honey, mesquite and cacao.

i wanted to highlight just a few of my favorite websites today. i've probably mentioned them before but here i go again in one swoop:

http://www.tonyakay.com/ – raw vegan performer

http://crazysexycancer.blogspot.com/ – kris carr's site. she's endlessly lovely to me. i learn so much from her and i adore her writing style.

http://rawtoddleralex.blogspot.com/ – if i could follow this toddler's diet i would rock so hard!

http://rawmom.com/blog/ – again, well written blog that is full of positive women

these four sites are ones i truly learn from and love each time i read. they get me thinking, motivated, and going!

D: juliano!! dinner was fantastic! six courses of raw perfection. i love gourmet raw food, i mean sally albright in when harry met sally, love it. true for real orgasm love. dig it. he says he's going to come every three months to portland and put this little party on. so, if you're in the area look it up! i should have grabbed a menu but here it goes from memory: a fancy elixir drink with bee pollen and honey, yes i'm one of those vegans who eats honey. second, a perfect salad with spicy creamy no nuts and no seeds dressing- how did they do this? seaweed soup with avocado, and then a plate with three yummies- a zucchini creamy pasta,  greek nachos, and a dehydrated vegetable rich flavored little dish. dessert was a creamy strawberry mousse with beepollen and manna on the top. there were edible flowers and free flowing water. juliano's lecture was short and entertaining. he said when anyone asks him a question he always has the same answer: raw food and yoga. i concur.

smooches!

this song goes through my head a lot, joni mitchell's hejira:

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
That shell shock love away
There's comfort in melancholy
When there's no need to explain
It's just as natural as the weather
In this moody sky today
In our possessive coupling
So much could not be expressed
So now I'm returning to myself
These things that you and I suppressed
I see something of myself in everyone
Just at this moment of the world
As snow gathers like bolts of lace
Waltzing on a ballroom girl

You know it never has been easy
Whether you do or you do not resign
Whether you travel the breadth of extremities
Or stick to some straighter line
Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock
They're either going to thaw out or freeze
Listen
Strains of Benny Goodman
Coming through the snow and the pinewood trees
I'm porous with travel fever
But you know I'm so glad to be on my own
Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger
Can set up trembling in my bones
I know no one's going to show me everything
We all come and go unknown
Each so deep and superficial
Between the forceps and the stone

Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tribute to finality to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken scratching for my immortality
In the church they light the candles
And the wax rolls down like tears
There's the hope and the hopelessness
I've witnessed thirty years
We're only particles of change I know I know
Orbiting around the sun
But how can I have that point of view
When I'm always bound and tied to someone
White flags of winter chimneys
Waving truce against the moon
In the mirrors of a modern bank
From the window of a hotel room

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
Until love sucks me back that way
